Lecturer in Microbiology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Alexandria University — Alexandria, Egypt.
Egyptian Fulbright Scholar · 2012–2013Dr. Alaa Abouelfetouh is a Lecturer in Microbiology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Alexandria University — the same institution where she completed her undergraduate degree and, in 2010, earned her Ph.D. It was in those early post-doctoral days that she began to sense how circumscribed her experience had been: she had spent her entire academic life on one campus, and she was, in her own words, "starving for knowledge, both in my field of study and in life in general."
She had long known of the Fulbright Commission and the opportunities it opens for Egyptians to study in the United States. But it was a chance encounter in 2010 with a former Fulbrighter that turned admiration into action. She started following Fulbright programs closely, reached out to an American professor, and together they shaped a research proposal that would carry her across the Atlantic.
In 2012, Dr. Abouelfetouh took up an Egyptian Fulbright Scholar grant at Loyola University in Chicago. There she immersed herself in an area of microbiology she had never ventured into during her earlier studies, encountering new laboratory techniques, a different way of framing scientific questions, and a research culture that pushed her to think beyond the boundaries of her training.
The grant did more than expand a single line of research. It reconnected her with the wider world of her discipline and renewed the curiosity that had drawn her to science in the first place — knowledge and perspective she carried home to her students and colleagues in Alexandria.
The Fulbright grant gave me far more than a year abroad. It exposed me to a different way of thinking, reminded me how much there is still to learn, and gave me the courage to keep asking new questions long after I returned home.
