Fulbright Egyptian Scholar Program — Research Grant

A non-degree research grant for Egyptian faculty members and researchers to conduct three to nine months of advanced research at U.S. institutions — in every field of study.

Program Goal

The Fulbright Egyptian Scholar Program — Research Grant provides opportunities for Egyptian faculty members from Egyptian universities and research centers to conduct research at U.S. institutions in all fields of study. All fields are eligible.

Grant duration: 3 to 9 months. Applicants across the humanities, social sciences, arts, sciences, STEM and the medical and health fields may apply. Applicants in medicine, veterinary medicine, nursing, psychological counseling and dentistry should note that their programs cannot include clinical studies or direct contact with patients.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Egyptian citizenship.
  • Applicants must reside in Egypt from the application process and throughout the selection, placement and pre-departure stages.
  • A full-time faculty member at a university in Egypt, or a full-time research member at an Egyptian research center.
  • A PhD degree is required.
  • An excellent command of English.
  • Successful completion of all steps of the application, assessment and selection process.
  • U.S. citizens and green-card holders are not eligible to apply. Employees of the U.S. Department of State, U.S. mission staff, ECA-implementing organizations, and Fulbright Commission board members or staff (and their immediate families) are ineligible during, and for one year following, such employment.

Note: Preference is given to applicants without prior significant experience in the U.S. and/or overseas.

Required Documents

All documents must be uploaded to the online application by the published deadline. The core checklist includes:

  • Completed online application.
  • A project statement.
  • A bibliography.
  • A PhD certificate, in English.
  • A CV with clear contact information and updated publications.
  • A letter of support from the home institution.
  • Three recommendation letters.
  • A scanned copy of the original valid National ID and a personal photo.
  • Scanned copies of any previous U.S. J1 or J2 visas, if applicable.

Application Process · AY2027–2028

The selection follows a clear sequence: program announcement, online application deadline, application review, personal interviews for shortlisted applicants, a post-interview information session, official nomination or regret letters, pre-departure orientation for semi-finalists, and finally the departure date for selected applicants who complete all stages and pre-departure requirements.

The Fulbright Program seeks applicants with personal integrity and original thinking. All content must be the applicant's own work; any use of AI tools must be clearly disclosed. Plagiarism — including unintentional plagiarism — or undisclosed AI use will disqualify an application.
