Program Goal

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program provides fully funded opportunities for American faculty members, artists and independent scholars to teach and/or conduct research at universities or research institutions in Egypt for three to nine months. It is the principal pathway for U.S. academics and professionals to spend a semester or more living, teaching and collaborating in Egypt.

Grant Types

  • Teaching grants.
  • Research grants.
  • Combined teaching / research grants.
Awards for Egypt. Open awards include the Egypt Distinguished Scholar Award; All Disciplines; Visual and Performing Arts; the American University in Cairo award; Business Administration; Sciences; and the Community College Faculty Award. Each award has its own discipline focus and host arrangements.

Eligibility Criteria

  • U.S. citizenship. Applicants must hold U.S. citizenship at the time of application; permanent residence is not sufficient.
  • Residency abroad. Applicants who have resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six-year period preceding the deadline are ineligible. A period of nine months or more during a calendar year counts as a full year.
  • Academic / professional requirements. Award descriptions specify where a PhD, other terminal degree or comparable professional qualifications are required. Evidence of scholarly research and/or a teaching record in the proposed project's field is required.
  • Language requirements. All teaching is in English; no additional language proficiency is required for teaching grants. Research grants require Arabic or other applicable language proficiency sufficient to complete the project, evaluated through a language proficiency review; applicants without it must demonstrate that the research can feasibly be conducted in English.
  • Prior Fulbright Scholar awards. Recipients may apply for another award two years after completing the previous one. Fulbright Specialist Program grantees are exempt from the two-year wait. Preference is given to applicants who have not previously received a Scholar award.
  • Department of State employees. Employees and their immediate families (spouses and dependent children) of the Fulbright Commission in Egypt, the U.S. Department of State, and of organizations under contract to the Department are ineligible until one year after termination of such employment.

For U.S. Applicants Coming to Egypt

Fulbright U.S. Scholars are hosted by Egyptian universities and research centers. Beyond their teaching or research project, scholars become part of the binational exchange that the Commission has fostered since 1949 — building lasting academic ties between U.S. and Egyptian institutions, "one Fulbrighter at a time."

The Fulbright Program seeks applicants with personal integrity and original thinking, and a genuine commitment to mutual understanding between the people of the United States and Egypt.
